# UpTogether Members Lead the Charge to Block SB2010, Protecting Guaranteed Income in Texas

 Published by [UpTogether](https://blog.uptogether.org/author/uptogether) on Jun 6, 2025, 11:50:03 AM

UpTogether members from across the state mobilized, organized, and shared their stories—and because of their efforts, SB2010, a bill that would have banned local governments from providing guaranteed income, has been stopped in its tracks.

This victory belongs to them.

Together with our partners at Economic Security Project and Every Texan, and with the support of local leaders, UpTogether members showed the power of community-led advocacy. Families stood up to defend their right—and the right of every Texan—to design solutions that reflect their needs and values.

“We all came together to hear our stories together and make our voices heard together. I feel like that’s what unity is,” said Tina Acosta, an UpTogether member from San Antonio.

Their message was clear: Guaranteed income works.

Over the past few months, UpTogether members have been on the front lines of this fight. In March, more than 70 members, partners, and supporters gathered in Austin for Texas Family Economic Security Day. They held a People’s Hearing and met face-to-face with lawmakers to share their experiences and advocate for guaranteed income.

Just two weeks later, 20 members waited hours to testify at a public hearing, courageously sharing how direct cash helped them stay housed, care for their children, recover from illness, and overcome hardship.

In April, with little notice, members made the long drive across Texas to speak out against SB2010 in the Senate. Their voices made the difference.

“There’s so much power in allowing people to tell their own stories. I wanted to witness this and be part of it,” said Ashleigh Hamilton, an UpTogether member from Austin.

Their leadership was undeniable—and it worked. The bill failed to move forward. Guaranteed income remains legal in Texas.

UpTogether has distributed $32 million to more than 40,000 households across Texas—from Austin to Dallas, San Antonio to El Paso. The impact from Austin is clear:

- Employment among participants in our Central Texas pilot increased from 56% to 67%
- 73% of participants increased their annual income
- 48% decreased their debt
- 6% became homeowners

Even six months after payments ended, participants’ median income continued to rise, proving the long-term power of direct cash.

This win is more than just a blocked bill. It’s a reminder that when community members are trusted with capital and given a platform to lead, they create real, lasting change—not just for themselves, but for their neighbors and future generations.

SB2010 won’t be the last challenge—but our members have shown that they are ready.

We celebrate this victory today because of them. And we prepare for what’s next—together.
